John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson

John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson was born in Madison County, TN  on March 30, 1914.  Learning to play the harmonica as a child, he rose from earning nickels and dimes playing Jackson street corners to become a highly influential pioneer in the field of blues music.

In 1934, he settled in Chicago, where he performed regularly at various clubs and night spots. In addition, he was prolific in recording for Victor and Columbia record labels.   His rising career was tragically ended on June 1, 1948, when he was killed while returning home after a performance.  His numerous recordings and the recollections of those who knew him continue to influence blues artists to the present day.

He is buried in the old Blairs Chapel CME cemetery in Madison County.  For more information, contact the library.
