John Luther "Casey" Jones (1863-1900) grew up in Jackson, TN. The railroad engineer, famous for being on time, became a part of local folklore when, trying to make up time on a run from Memphis, Casey rounded a curve outside of Vaughn, Mississippi and saw a freight. Telling his fireman to jump, Casey rode the train till the end. When his body was found, one hand was on the air brake and the other, on the whistle. The song beginning "Come all you rounders for I want you to hear the story told of the brave engineer. Casey Jones was the rounder's name. On a heavy six-eight wheeler he rode to fame" insured Casey's story a place in history.
He is buried in Jackson in the Calvary Catholic cemetery on Hardee Street.
