Miss Emma Inman Williams

                     

October 6, 1906 Born.  Henderson, Chester County, Tennessee.
Only child of Charles Willis Williams
and Rhoda (Montague) Williams.  Family moved to
Jackson, Tennessee when E.I.W. was ten years old.
1924 Graduate, Jackson High School.  Honor Student.
1928 Graduate, B.A., Washington University, St. Louis,
Missouri; having taken three years of her
undergraduate coursework at Lambuth College,
Jackson, Tennessee.
1928-1936 English instructor, Jackson Junior High School.
1937 Became American history teacher, Jackson High
School, in which capacity she served until
her retirement.
1941 Graduate, M.A. (History), University of Chicago.
1943-1948 Columnist; writer of a weekly series of historical
articles for The Jackson Sun.
July 7, 1943 Member of the Madison County Historical Society,
Jackson, established June 23, 1943.  She was
recognized at this time for her historical research
and writing while a graduate student at the
University of Chicago.
June 13, 1944 Selected by membership of Madison County
Historical Society "to write" the history of Madison
County, as a contribution to the State  of
Tennessee's Sesquicentennial Celebration.
November 1, 1946 Official date of publication of Historic Madison,
written by E.I.W. and published by the Madison
County Historical Society (holder of copyright of
this book).
1948 Editor, Centennial Edition, The Jackson Sun.
1949 Became Book Editor, Sunday Editions,
The Jackson Sun.  Held this position for many years.
June 1, 1972 Retirement, after forty-four years service,
from the Jackson City School System.
1972 Became Tennessee Room Librarian, Jackson/Madison
County Library, Jackson, Tennessee.
1972 Reprint, Second Edition, Historic Madison,
published by The Jackson Service League

1979 "Woman of the Year" Award, Altrusa Club,
Jackson, in recognition of her public merit.
